Keep your dog safe in hot weather
Reading this article could save the life of your dog. Summer brings days longer, yemperatures warm and a need for security. Whether you live in the far north, the deep south, the coast or in the desert, the more you know about the safety of hot dogs time, the better.
For example, at temperatures of 40, 50, 60 or 70 degrees Fahrenheit (depending on humidity levels) leaving your dog in the car can become in a fatality. Dog heat stroke happens fast. Many places have laws about leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle and the places they do not, they should.
Think about it! If its 70 degrees, the humidity is high (what the heat index more than 80/85 degrees Fahrenheit) in all the car windows rolled with a 1-3 "opening, the car is in direct sun or shade, and you leave your dog in the car for more than 10 minutes, could this be a problem? Maybe is 80 or 90 degrees Fahrenheit and leave your dog in the car. Enjoy the moment and ask yourself, is it safe? Ask yourself if you would be safe under the conditions no longer planning leave your dog in. A baby safe? If your answer is no, then your dog will not be safe either. A police officer, animal control officer, veterinarian or scold you or possibly ticket you for leaving your dog? If the answer is yes, then do not.
If you have questions about the safety of your dog, hear that and act accordingly. In the spring and summer months, dog heat exhaustion / heat stroke is the main concern. Believe me, seeing a dog due succumbing to heat exhaustion / stroke is heart breaking. They refuse water and food, lethargic breath, quickly, can not get up, are disoriented, continuous vomiting, uncontrollable diarrhea, and die slowly.
To protect your dog heat exhaustion and heat stroke, read and observe the following principles:
* Do not let the dog in the car unless you intend to leave the air conditioning running.
* Do not let your dog run in the middle of the day.
Let your dog go for it in the early morning or evening when it's cooler.
* Please note if you live in a climate moisture. Exercise your dog when the humidity is very low.
* Take stock if your dog has a dark coat. They run hotter faster (black absorbs heat-repellent blank).
* Take special care with short-nosed dogs such as pugs, bulldogs, mastiffs and Shih Tzu. These breeds overheat much faster and dogs are very susceptible to heat stroke.
* Provide shade for your dog. Buy a tarp or a sheet in the thrift store and put it in your case. It is much cheaper than a vet bill.
* Always have fresh, clean water available for your dog. When the Man is hot, they need hydration. Dogs need hydration also. It has a large plastic bowl (metal is heated) & leave your hose running a little garden at the plate. A vet bill can be much larger than a water bill.
* No, a cold beer is not the answer on a hot summer day! Alcohol is poisoned his dog. Give your dog lots of cool, clean water.
* Please do not tie your dog outside in hot weather. Dogs easily get the strap wrapped around various objects and end up in the sun. This is a recipe for accident dog heat stroke.
* Remember that your dog does not wear shoes and asphalt, concrete, etc. get very hot in the summer sun. Burned puppy pads are painful and can become a serious problem with an infection quickly. Imagine walking barefoot on asphalt in the summer. Ay! Walk your dog when it's cooler outside and preferably in shaded areas.
* When you're out and about with your dog, do not let your dog drink from stagnant water sources. These often have bacteria and mold that will make your dog very sick. Bring a water bottle and train your dog to drink from it.
* Never, never leave your dog unsupervised around a pool. They can choke easily. If you have a pool, training your dog on the stairs are so they know how to get out. As children, keep an eye on your dog at all times when in the pool area.
Immediately call your emergency veterinarian or animal hospital if any of the following occurs:
* Rapid breathing with an increased heart rate.
* Your dog has discolored gums – Dogs with heat stroke off the gums have gray or pink in color instead of the normal red-pink.
* Your dog is confused – are not aware of their surroundings.
* Your dog is not listening or obeying commands, seems lost or scared.
* Your dog has a wild or panicked expression.
If you suspect your dog may have heat stroke, first call your Veterinarian or emergency animal hospital and then to help their dogs by temperature:
* Gently place a cool washcloth on unhaired belly area. Keep rinsing the cloth with cool water and applying until your dog is calmer (this is only about 5 minutes).
This is not a substitute for getting your dog to the vet or emergency center animals. Get checked. It could save your life.
With increasing temperatures in all, be aware and make adjustments when necessary to take the best care of your dog. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your vet or veterinary technician.
Your dog trusts to care for them. Do a good job. The rewards are priceless.
